Crass stupidity would be the real answer, Two factors One would be Ruth Maguire resigning as a councillor, when she was elected as a MSP to Holyrood , she resigned as councillor. She knew the balance was on the cards. But she did it. Jump or pushed? I tend towards the latter. She didn't need to 22 MSPs sit on seats in Councils and as MSPs
The Evening Times had this article www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/14492464.Conservative_councillor_who_was_elected_as_an_MSP_to_take_two_salaries_totalling___75_000/
Some gave the Council salary to charity, others clearly think their need is greater
She created a reason for a Bye Election at a cost from the public coffers
Why oh Why did someone then pick Mr Sturgeon? Had it been left to May I don't doubt he will get elected.
But seriously, a Bye Election all the focus on him , all the animosity towards Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP together with the fact that her mother was the provost who thought that one? Which village is missing someone? I'm think there is reason to believe that someone within the party caused the sabotage
What happened next The SNP leader goes on holiday, and the SNP resign, Why did they choose that time? Again,Jump or pushed? This time I think ordered They could have just sat tight The old chestnut integrity doesn't wash
Following events don't stack up either, Councillors not standing for re-election, A bizarre and to my mind insulting interview in the Ardrossan-Saltcoats Herald by Willie Gibson

Yes, there's obviously more to it than meets the eye. The whole thing is very strange and to put Nicola's dad up for election was very stupid.

The relationship as MSPs between Macguire and Gibson seems a bit suspect, No not that way ....Hmmmm...........Macguire and Gibson promote Dad Sturgeon to stand , and it goes pearshaped,.......Leaving Macguire to help out Gibson with his protégées
Me I'd have left the status quo and around £12K to charity......(and saved the cost of a bye-election still it wasn't their money)
